A Brand Revolution

Urban Landscapes, LLC is approaching its fifth anniversary, prompting a necessary evaluation of our branding. While I’ve cherished our original logo crafted by my talented 11-year-old son, it was time for a refresh. We sought the expertise of Schmid Studio to digitally enhance our logo, revamp our website, and refine our brand, under the guidance of Tiffany Schmid.

This process allowed us to introspect on Urban Landscapes’ identity and trajectory. From the outset, I’ve steered the company’s evolution carefully, preferring to maintain a hands-on approach to design and project execution. As a small business owner, wearing multiple hats—from CAD and Photoshop work to accounting and marketing—is a familiar scenario.

In the midst of the Covid-19 economic downturn, Urban Landscapes emerged, drawing parallels to a previous entrepreneurial endeavor during the Great Recession of 2010 (Olson Planning & Urban Landscapes). Amidst economic upheaval, the imperative for differentiation became paramount. For us, this translated into a focus on niche categories of infill and redevelopment, prioritizing placemaking and new urbanism over conventional suburban design.

While the majority of our endeavors align with these niche pursuits, we occasionally field requests from past clients and acquaintances for projects that may initially seem mundane. Yet, our dedication to the success of our repeat clients compels us to take on these ventures, confident in our ability to elevate them to greatness.

Reflecting on the transformation of the former Lincoln Elementary School encapsulates this ethos. Initially slated for a mundane conversion into document storage, we recognized its latent potential. Presenting the client with a vision that balanced practical needs with aspirational design, we championed a scenario that not only accommodated document storage with the zoning, but also envisioned a vibrant communal space. Gratefully, our vision found resonance with the client, the city, and the surrounding community. Today, the once-dormant school thrives as a hub for small businesses, a testament to the power of thoughtful infill design.

This ethos sets us apart, becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy over time. I firmly believe that passion fuels quality design, making work feel less like a chore. Our collective passion for our craft ensures that we deliver excellence, fulfilling both client and company objectives.

Throughout my two-decade career, I’ve tackled complex zoning and land development applications with unwavering success. Despite encountering challenges—from community opposition to bureaucratic hurdles—every project has left a positive impact on its surroundings.

As town planners, we bear a significant responsibility for the resilience of our communities and the planet at large. Designing spaces centered around automobiles exacerbates systemic issues, jeopardizing public health, economics, and the environment.

Peruse our website; if something sparks enthusiasm or warrants discussion, I’m all ears. Your feedback is invaluable as we strive to enhance our communities together. Thanks for your support, and let’s keep making strides toward a brighter future!
