United We Stand
Wow, last night was an eventful evening with the news of the death of Osama Bin Laden! Twitter was so busy with excitement that it appeared to have crashed a few times. I managed to ‘retweet’ the following which was a beautiful timeless quote by Mark Twain:
“I’ve never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure.”
It was an evening of mixed feelings for me. My memories of September 11, 2001 came pouring back to me with feelings of sadness for those who were lost, personal fear for my own parents who were a few blocks from the Pentagon when it was struck and also pride for the heroes of the day. Following that, I was in great jubilation with the sense of relief that this villain responsible for that fateful day was brought to justice. Today, I have the feeling that this is still not enough and that more should be done. I am not making a political statement when I say that more should be done, but rather more recognition should be given to our Armed Forces, Police Officers, Fire Men and Women and others who serve our great country.
One way that more could be done is local, where a parade could take place in cities and towns, especially where a large population of Armed Forces resides (i.e. Colorado Springs with Fort Carson, Air Force Academy, Schriever Air Force Base, Peterson Air Force Base and NORAD.
I look forward to continuing to serve those who serve our country at Fort Carson this week. They have a lot to be proud of and are more than deserving of our respect, gratitude and service.
